The legacy of Edward Gorey is as uniquely legendary as the man himself. Alison Bechdel, Neil Gaiman, Daniel Handler, Anna Sui, and Guillermo del Toro are a few among the scores of influential creatives who have cited Gorey as an inspiration. Just as essential to the preservation of his work is the massive community of artists, writers, cartoonists, illustrators, Goths, weirdos, felinophiles, and general ne’er-do-wells who proudly fly the Gorey banner. The spirit of his work and creativity continues to flourish decades after his passing thanks to this enthsiastic, ink-splattered devotion.
In recognition and celebration of this mostly-benign cult, the Edward Gorey House, in collaboration with Boston-area artist and educator Matisse DuPont, is pleased to invite a gathering of creatives who embody the Gorey spirit in their practices for a Day of Making Things. On June 28th, a small group of artists will set up in the House and on the grounds to soak up all the Gorey they can find. Their fruit from the day is a piece inspired by their unique relationship to Gorey’s work and their time at his home. A gallery opening and exhibition of their work at the House opens on July 22nd at 6 pm.
