2023 Halloween Envelope Art Contest Results: Gorey Catwalk

Once again, it’s that time of year where we remind you of the Reason for the Season — cats and discomforting art. A hearty thank-you to the hundreds of you who shared your talents and sense of macabre whimsy with ushere at the House. We like to think that Edward would be as pleased as we are.

On to the talent.

Please note — when clicked on, the preview image will expand into the full glory of each submission,
along with names, results, and our inane commentary.

Seven and Under:

Our Age 7 and Under Category was significantly underrepresented this year. We assume the non-entrants are otherwise occupied with the pressing realities of that grim age. Ergo, we’ve settled on three winners without differentiating between first place and finalists. Sometimes we do that.

Eight to Eleven:

Our Age 8 to 11 Category remains a unique window into the psyche of the developing artist, as exemplified by the diversity in style, theme, and aggression shown this year.

Twelve to Fourteen:

The next three age groups in our 2023 Envelope Art Contest become very difficult, indeed. It is a heartless task to weed these entries down to a handful. Holliston High School in Holliston, MA perennially produces crops of exceptional artists and this year a school new to the competition, Parkway School in Ballwin, MO, sent over a lot of outstanding entries. Congrats to all those fine young artists and the teachers who provoke them.

Fifteen to Eighteen:

Moving up the Categories for the Catwalk we come to the Age 15 to 18 group. As usual, we're easily wowed by entries that play with the physical properties of their canvas: manipulating an envelope to tell a story. That is why Cecilia Wendelken sits in First Place. Applause again to Holliston and Parkway HSs (MA and MO) for a great batch of participating artists.

Over Eighteen:

The Final official CateGorey in the Gorey Catwalk, our Adult Artists now get to chime in. An amazing body of work this year, with this selection just showing a tip of the tip of the iceberg. Some finalists from last year are here again -- welcome back -- and some new names. We'll delve into each entry in more detail and will be posting additional works when we get the chance. Thank you to every one of the 431 artists who sent their work to the House.
